Last summer I went on a road trip to Austria. One of the highlights of that trip was the famous Grossglockner high alpine road. I filmed the journey on my Gopro, and for anyone that’s interested you can watch the videos on my Youtube channel at the link below.
It’s 37 eur for a day ticket for a car, but if you’re in the area for a few days I’d highly recommend getting the 3 week ticket for 59 eur. I think it’s worth paying the extra, you can go up and down as many times as you want, and there’s so many places to stop and explore.
Tickets can be bought at either of the 2 tolls. One is at Fusch an der Glocknerstrasse in the North, and the other is at Heiligenblut in the South. Personally I found it easier to buy the tickets in advance online, so much easier. In the mid summer months the road opens from 5am. You’ll pretty much have it to yourself at this time. It seems to get busy from around 8am, but I found it was never overly busy at any time of day. There are plenty of laybys to stop at and take in the view and there’s also 3 , (I think), restaurants to stop at should you fancy a bite to eat.
The road to the actual glacier is a dead end. You turn off from the main route and follow the twists and turns until you reach the huge car park. This is free by the way but does fill up in busy times.
The view from here is spectacular, and if you’re feeling fit you can walk down the steps to the actual glacier. Beware though, they are pretty steep. It’s definitely worth the effort. It’s hard to grasp the scale of the glacier if you don’t head down to the waters edge. The image below will help give you an idea.
Once at the bottom you realise the ground you’re standing on is actually just a thin layer of dirt and gravel on solid ice.
If you have enough time head along the waters edge. The further you go the more you’ll have this magical place to yourself. Remember to take some warm clothing the weather can change pretty quickly. If you are planning a trip to the Grossglockner I would allow at least one day, if not more. You wont be disappointed.
